Name | Domestic Violence (CA only) (Archives, 1987-2019) |
Summary | Domestic violence calls, types of domestic violence |
Additional Background | This database contains information about abuse committed against an adult or a fully emancipated minor who is a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant, former cohabitant, or person with whom the suspect has had a child or is having or has had a dating or engagement relationship.
Law enforcement agencies record the total number of domestic violence calls, incidents in which weapons are involved, and, if so, what type of weapon. Starting in 2002, law enforcement agencies were given clarification about reporting personal weapons, which led to a decrease in the number of personal weapons reported. Starting in 2018, agencies report whether the incident involved strangulation or suffocation. As a result, calls involving strangulation or suffocation are NA prior to 2018. For additional information, see limitations for this database provided by the California Department of Justice.
Population data reflect July 1 figures each year and are based on data provided by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Calls per 10,000 are not available for special districts since there is no reliable population data.
