This database reports the total number of families and households by income levels for all states and more than 1,300 counties.  Household type definitions include:

  • Families: Group of two people or more (one of whom is the householder) related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing together
  • Married-couple families: A family, i.e., a husband and wife, as members of the same household
  • Households: All of the people who occupy a housing unit, including the related family members and all the unrelated people, if any
  • Nonfamily households: A householder living alone (a one-person household) or where the householder shares the home exclusively with people to whom he/she is not related.
